Citizen Engagement Survey Questions Summary

Candidate name 1. How will you ensure that community consultation is done effectively and openly, with productive dialogue from start to finish for municipal projects and decisions?

John Antonioni

This entire election is an election about ownership. Council cannot run this city. Staff cannot run this city. We need to afford the electorate the opportunity to take ownership and control of the direction of this city.

Fern Cormier

I want all stake-holders and interested partied brought to the table at the beginning of a project. Not half way through or when staff says it's ok. I believe we can accomplish more by working together at the front end of project planning.

Hannu Piironen

I will start with myself. I will make myself available for consultation with individuals and community groups and stakeholders. I will be open to suggestions ideas and perspectives that can only enhance the decision-making process. I will assist in the creation of a Community Action Network for Ward 10. This group, which will operate in an arms length relationship from me as Councillor, can offer advice and feedback on my work at City Hall. Should there still be a form of Healthy Community Initiative Funds, I would seek input from the community on how they are to be spent.

Steve Ripley

I will hold an unprecedented number of ward open houses to discuss subjects that affect ward 10.

Mila Wong

Mandatory community consultation for project and decisions = contentious and any decisions that will involve taxes paid.
Progress reports on a monthly basis to Council.
TRANSPARENCY! THERE SHOULD BE NOTHING TO HIDE. Anything hidden connotes wrong doing.

Candidate name 2. How will you ensure a consistent culture of openness and support for public input across all city departments?

John Antonioni

I look to making community consultation a primary method of governance and guidance. I would encourage town hall sessions in all wards at the beginning of this term of Council in order to validate and/or update Sudbury’s strategic plan and to map out, not only economic development but also governance issues. Furthermore, municipal and Council meetings would benefit from being held at remote locations in and around the wards. Meeting and information sessions can be held at more appropriate times and in more convenient locations and results and agendas for meeting should be posted in a timely manner. Furthermore, the municipal government must begin utilization of internet based communication technologies in this, the digital age. This promotes digital inclusion and fosters better communications.

Fern Cormier

I believe that all information should be made available in real time. I believe we should have a standing policy that any and all information be made available to the public from all city departments. Unless the law specifically prevents it, information needs to be shared in an open and transparent way.

Hannu Piironen

Only a culture of openness and a respect for public input will erase the distrust and disconnect between citizens and City Hall. As Council one of the first acts should be to remove the overt security at City Council meetings. There should be no barriers between the public and its representatives. Council should set the example for all staff.

Steve Ripley

I support Open government, Open information with the public.

Mila Wong

Tighten and demand accountability from department heads.
Orientation, training and education for Council in City operations.
Monthly reports to Council at council meetings.

Complacency, Arrogance and “Untouchable” attitudes by senior management must be dealt with by Council

A-One of the most frequent complaints I have heard is a lack of follow up on calls to City Hall. It is very difficult to talk to the same person in relation to a complaint lodged or on a particular issue.
B-while you can’t force engagement from the public it is important that the public be informed of pending policies and projects before any final decisions are made.
C-as soon as practicable. There could be good reasons for late changes or additions to agendas and background material. However if the only reason to withhold the material or agenda items is to forestall full discussion of the item in question I would be very opposed to the delay.

I support Open government, Open information with the public.
