Citizen Engagement Survey Questions Summary

Candidate name 1. How will you ensure that community consultation is done effectively and openly, with productive dialogue from start to finish for municipal projects and decisions?

Robin Auger

Holding more community meetings and advertising them better when we are making major decisions are starting a major project. We must communicate more often and "loudly" when we are doing things that will effect people (i.e the Lasalle-Notre Dame widening and traffic alerts for this). We also have to advertise on our buses or at our facilities regarding city services and even public consultation meetings.

Gordon Drysdale

Mike Jakubo

This is a key step in the process because a project without the support of surrounding residents will be doomed to fail. I will ensure that a community consultation takes place on any project or major decision in my ward.

Dave Kilgour (Incumbent)

Thanks for the question. I have worked for three years trying to encourage the use of an “open date” model and other progressive apps for use by the city.
I have presented on a least two occasions various digital apps such as Calgary’s 311 app and Kitchener’s Pingstreet app. Several communities such as Edmonton, Calgary Barrie, Ottawa have made extensive use of apps to encourage a public exchange with citizens. Our planning department is in its second year of developing a entirely new permitting, building control and bylaw software that will allow a much faster and more efficient turn around of permits and at the same time ensure a more consistent product.

Candidate name 2. How will you ensure a consistent culture of openness and support for public input across all city departments?

Robin Auger

The first step is to update the City web site to allow for the public to submit ideas, comments, and after doing do we should have a set time limit to get back to the submitter. By auditing our City services to find areas we need to improve it will signal a change in how we will be serving the public, we will have to work hard to show we are ready to listen and to serve our citizens. Customer service should be our focus and we should train each person in every service in Customer Service techniques.

Mike Jakubo

3-1-1 has the potential to be a very valuable service in terms of openness and public input. But too often there are stories of how 3-1-1 calls are not followed up on and a call or e-mail to a councillor is also not followed up on. By being accountable to residents and looking into all concerns the City can find better ways of operating all departments. 3-1-1 is great for this because it assigns a case number to each call. This case number will allow follow up by the resident and by me as a councillor directly with the department involved.

Dave Kilgour (Incumbent)

I will continue to champion these positive directions. By soliciting greater support and demand from the public we can move forward more quickly. We cannot change the past but we can learn from it as we move forward.

C-I do not believe that using our current processes we have the ability to turn things around that quickly. A move to more digital approvals could assist a quicker turn around.
