Local Food Survey Questions Summary

Candidate name 1. How do you see the city’s role in food system sustainability, access to local food, and the connection to health?

Matt Alexander

Sudbury is lucky to have as much agricultural land as we have. We should work harder to preserve our farmland, support our farmers and attract new farmers. I’ll support new community gardens and produce swaps in Ward 1’s urban neighbourhoods to support food education, community-building and place-making.

Denis Ferron

The city must protect the rich areas of agriculture, a weekend farmer’s market with local product available. Close the downtown every weekend in the summer like we do at ribfest and have a huge market, fresh local produce tastes much better and encourages all to eat healthier.

Mathieu Labonté

Sidney Shapiro

I think its important to use locally grown food, and there is an amazing variety of food available locally. We often shop at the market and Eat Local Sudbury, and we are fortunate to have such amazing resources right here in our community. I think we can expand the use of local food in our institutions, and do so in a manner that is fiscally responsible and one that will result in better health benefits and nutrition.

Mark Signoretti

I feel that the City has a very important role in the food system and we should be making sure that we have access to local food and maintain the connection to health.

Paul Soucie

By encouraging local food producers with incentives.BY publicizing the benefits .

Chris Spry

The city can play a key role in promotion of healthy eating and making local healthy food available. The Farmer’s Market is not open long enough or on dates convenient for most residents.

Thomas Trainor

Candidate name 2. How would you develop local agriculture and fresh water and forest foods?

Matt Alexander

The Sudbury Market should explore the feasibility of waiving vendor fees for farmers within the municipality. Lost revenue might be recovered by opening the market retail units during the week for sale of prepared food and non-food items.

Denis Ferron

I would give farmers incentive to grow and sell there produce by giving them the space in town every weekend and promote this market. Fresh water may come from new wells.

Mathieu Labonté

Sidney Shapiro

I believe working with local partners, such as the Veggie Box initiative, is a great way to get the community involved in supporting local produce businesses.

Mark Signoretti

I would continue to promote this through education and make sure that we continue to find ways to assist farms to see that this continues to happen.

Paul Soucie

with the use of incentives to the local producers

Chris Spry

Promotion and education.

Explanations:

Candidate name Explanations

Matt Alexander

A – Any food action plan must have achievable targets and a strategy for implementation
B – I would support giving a priority to local food suppliers in procurement policies, however I would like to know the feasibility of targets considering the relatively limited selection of local food options in the area.
C – Food brings communities together. I intend to host community dinners, outdoor pizza nights and other events to bring people together over food. I’ll support new community gardens and food sharing initiatives.
D – Development in our rural areas has devalued established neighbourhoods in Ward 1 and other parts of the city. I’ll support match-maker programs to find purchasers for farmland so our farmers can retire without turning their land over to suburban sprawl.
E – My concern is that our market may be too small to survive on local food alone. I support this as an ultimate goal, but at this point I don’t want to have to turn away vendor who may attract new patrons.
