Local Food Survey Questions Summary

Candidate name 1. How do you see the city’s role in food system sustainability, access to local food, and the connection to health?

Mike Bleskie

Our city plays an immense role at the planning level, by enabling growers to build the space they need, and allow for the type of agricultural operation they depend on to grow. The city also plays an important role in promoting that food and making sure there is access to that food.

Terry Kett (Incumbent)

We need to meld the goals of the Farmers Market with the goal of supporting local agriculture

Vincent Lacroix

Very important role.Economic development.

Chris Nerpin

The city's role is to ensure that is supports initiatives that promote local agriculture, and provides public education on the benefits to health, and the local economy.

Lynne Reynolds

Candidate name 2. How would you develop local agriculture and fresh water and forest foods?

Mike Bleskie

If the city is able to provide policies that create easier ways to create, promote and commercialize small-scale agriculture, we as individuals will be able to build our own 100-mile meals at home.

Terry Kett (Incumbent)

We need to show support for local agriculture by providing as much local food at every city function. The GSDC should provide small grants to local farmers who are trying to expand.

Vincent Lacroix

Encourage local farmers with funding for grant applications at provincial and federal levels.

Chris Nerpin

Working with the next council, I would develop an action plan to encourage development of local agriculture and forest foods. Developing and protecting fresh water is a priority to protecting the natural environment and waterways in Greater Sudbury.

I strongly feel that our Farmers Market must be run by an independent board of knowledgeable volunteers, free from city control. Let the board determine what days and hours the market should be open and the amount of local produce offered
