Local Food Survey Questions Summary

Candidate name 1. How do you see the city’s role in food system sustainability, access to local food, and the connection to health?

Fernand Bidal

Introducing policy that will encourage farmers to produce more and keep on producing.

Kevin Brault

Public awareness. Farmers need to pay their bills too and as long as the public opt out of buying local its not viable. I buy local whenever I can, then go province wide, and so on, as close to home as possible is the way forward. Less fossil fuels in transportation and in the food (imported tomatoes ripened chemically for example) but we need to support it ourselves as individuals. Local food systems are safer, more environmentally friendly and usually healthier.

René Lapierre

I want to see a bigger and better place for the farmers market to be to help them promote local food economy. Also I would support a greater selection of new "Sudbury only" restaurants or café's. As a councillor I will ensure that the red tape these businesses must go through to receipt permits would be minimised.

André Rivest (Incumbent)

Candidate name 2. How would you develop local agriculture and fresh water and forest foods?

Fernand Bidal

By creating committees by each of these groups to inform us .

Kevin Brault

Protection of agricultural land, and not allowing it to be developed into business or residential space. We need to re-think the Farmer's Market to help our local growers have a market. As for fresh water protection and forest foods I can not comment as I need more information.

René Lapierre

This is not my area of expertise therefore when elected I would request the help of those who are experts in this area and discuss their ideas and suggestion. As a team we could bring positive change for everyone involved

André Rivest (Incumbent)

Explanations:

Candidate name Explanations

Fernand Bidal

There are only about 40 percent of local farmers that participate in our farmers market .this has to be increased to a much larger magority.

Kevin Brault

As long as the farmer's designation wouldn't prevent local growers who would be excluded for some reason. If the food is grown here and or made here (jam for instance) we should allow it to be sold at the local market.

André Rivest (Incumbent)
