Education, Healthy Community Strategy. prmomote a better market, Good Food Box, serious budget considerations for local land development etc... marked for micro agriculture...community gardens

Kerry Latham

The city would be supportive of the concept recognize the social / economic health benefits. City could provide support through reduced user fees for vendors.

Gerry Perras

The city should facilitate efforts in creating community gardens. Support the local farmers market and try and educate the citizens on the importance of growing and buying local.

Stefano Presenza

This is absolutely crucial. There are many local farmers that can provide healthy options for residents, and City Council must work together with them to ensure they are able to reach people effectively.

Candidate name 2. How would you develop local agriculture and fresh water and forest foods?

Michael Cullen

For me this is very personal. My background was in the food industry and I have very close ties to the farming community.

Kerry Latham

For the most part this should be a private sector initiative. If the demand / market (public support)is there the private sector will develop this initiative as there is a profit to be made.

Gerry Perras

By dedicating areas in our existing parks to be used as community gardens. Having volunteers tend those gardens and sell the products at the farmers market.

Stefano Presenza

On of the challenges I have heard is that in Northern Ontario, vegetables are ready a little later in the year as compared with Southern Ontario. As a result, local farmers often miss out on spots at the local Farmers Market to their Southern counterparts. I would ensure that they have a reserved spot so as to ensure they have access to sharing their local agricultural products.

Kerry Latham

Citizens need choices, depending on their available food budget. Local growers need to be competitive and their is no reason why they can't, given they are close to their markets and would not have the associated transportation cost.
