Natural Environment Survey Questions Summary

Candidate name 1. How will you balance development with protection of the natural environment?

Matt Alexander

I’ll work with developers prior to the submission of a development application to identify areas that are appropriate for recreation and conservation uses. We can use parkland dedication policies in collaboration with residents and stewardship groups to set aside sensitive lands from development.

Denis Ferron

The development in Sudbury is essential as well as protection of the environment, we are fortunate to have solid rock in a majority of the boundaries in our city, I would encourage the development in those areas and leave the fragile ecosystem alone and protected. A foundation on rock is always a better foundation so we should encourage those areas for development.

Mathieu Labonté

By pushing to curb Sudbury's outwards development and promote the redevelopment of existing properties in town, I would hope to reduce the development of natural lands. It is silly to have large development towards the outer edges of town while at the same time buildings are being torn down and empty lots are left in the downtown and Lloyd/Kingsway area.

Sidney Shapiro

I think that we need to have natural areas, and respect those boundaries when they are close to development. While I understand the need for the city to grow, we have to maintain a careful balance to preserve the beauty of the city.

Mark Signoretti

I will make sure that development is regulated so any program must keep in mind the environment issues and make sure they are addressed before the development happens. Also there are place where development can happen in our city that won't disrupt our natural environment.

Paul Soucie

By making sure that current and any future development does not infringe upon our natural enviroment

Chris Spry

By preserving existing leisure lands as well as insisting recreational opportunities be included and built-in to any future developments.

Thomas Trainor

Candidate name 2. How will you champion opportunities in your ward to fill gaps in parks service and to protect unique natural areas (identified by the Green Space Advisory Panel)?

Matt Alexander

Ward 1 is lucky to have several undeveloped hills in our neighbourhoods. These hills provide scenic lookouts, but they are not accessible to all residents. I’ll work with property owners to set aside areas for public enjoyment and install ramps or stairs to improve accessibility.

Denis Ferron

Our parks and natural areas are for our use and therefore we must have community involvement and have a committee of local citizens to help in creating a sustainable plan for the needs of the citizens and help service and protect these areas, once destroyed they are gone forever.

Mathieu Labonté

Sidney Shapiro

Work with local groups and the city to keep the natural areas preserved and well maintained. Walking trail maintenance is a good example of this.

Mark Signoretti

I will work hard to get involved with Green Space Advisory Panel and champion these projects in my Ward. Ward 1.

Paul Soucie

By expanding our current parks services were possible and not allowing new development in our existing natural areas

Chris Spry

By meeting with those with expertise to identify which areas are priority areas and which are the most immediate need of preservation or upgrading.

Explanations:

Candidate name Explanations

Matt Alexander

A – There are instruments available to the city to require development proponents to protect or contribute funds towards the protection of green spaces. This means using municipal funds is not the only option, and I’d like to look at all opportunities to move forward with the strategy.
B – The whole purpose of adopting an official plan is to identify the area that are most- and least-appropriate for development. We need to ensure we stick with the plan to achieve our objectives.
C – The “Laurentian Link” would transform Loach’s Road from a residential street to a congested arterial road. For that reason alone I will not support punching a road through to Laurentien University. Instead, I would support improving Loach’s Road for cycling to provide a safe and effective alternative to Paris street for residents in the South End. I would also like to look at providing a bus-only roadway along this route to make transit a more viable option for students, workers and profs.
D – New roads can only be justified where they support sustainable financial growth in the city. If a new road can’t pay for itself through increased assessment then it should not be built. Roads planned through wetlands, conservation areas or floodplains cannot be supported by development along those routes and should be removed from the transportation master plan.

Denis Ferron

I am a canadian certified playground inspector CPSI and have helped in developing play spaces for children, i know the importance and need for these spaces to help the children get outdoors and keep physically fit and appreciate the outdoors and nature. i love the idea of new splash pads around our community, the children love these and it keeps them active. I will champion a such project immediately.

A-would prefer to see financials and the dedicated plan per Ward or location.
C-would need to see evidence and plan from all stakeholders involved.
D– would support this inquiry and study into this topic.

These are all great ideas, however I will need to see evidence and data from all sides before committing to any solid decision for or against.
