Natural Environment Survey Questions Summary

Candidate name 1. How will you balance development with protection of the natural environment?

Robin Auger

We must listen to both sides of this issue when we look at development to ensure we are balancing environmental needs and developmental needs so in other words develop wisely. In my opinion many times when these areas clash there is a compromise that can be found if you truly look at the issues from a logical frame of mind.

Mike Jakubo

More development is badly needed in our City, but not at the expense of the environment. There are endless areas for development that do not have a negative impact on the environment. Develop in those areas and ensure that planning department and committee uses an environmental checklist with industrial developments to make sure that harmful run-off is properly diverted and managed.

Dave Kilgour (Incumbent)

Development is important for the increase in assessment it brings and the ultimate ability of the related taxes to maintain reasonable tax increases. The overall value of development has to be assessed for environmental effects before we consider the value of the increase in assessment. Dollars can be far more easily replaced that can the environment.

Candidate name 2. How will you champion opportunities in your ward to fill gaps in parks service and to protect unique natural areas (identified by the Green Space Advisory Panel)?

Robin Auger

We here in Greater Sudbury have some of the nicest natural spaces, especially in the outlying areas. It is important in my mind to encourage our younger citizens and find ways to get them out to experience nature how its meant to be. As a council it can be a part of our mandate to help in findings ways to get children and young adults interested in our natural areas which can include developing interactive programs at some at some natural areas such as Ramsey Lake or Lake Laurentian.

Mike Jakubo

Ward 7 has a great opportunity to add to the Junction Creek walking path system from the beginning of the creek in Garson to connect with the paths on the south side of Maley Drive. This would build our parks system bringing it closer to nature. The whole ward also has a wonderful series of green spaces that need more attention and maintenance whether they are parks, playgrounds or paths. If we build something we need to make sure we take care of it.

Dave Kilgour (Incumbent)

I have had difficulty in finding local champions to promote and move this forward. I have begun to approach businesses with the idea of asking them to become more involved in their community and promote a more attractive, safer, healthier community.

Walter Prus

(a)Only on a capital project basis as this strategy should already be employed by the planning department (d) If there is no way to safely ensure the protection of the natural environment.

Dave Kilgour (Incumbent)

A-Would depend on where it is found. Some areas of our city have far more green space
than found elsewhere and there are areas that lack green space
D-Would have to see which roads are being discussed.
