Sustainable Transportation Survey Questions Summary

Candidate name 1. What does sustainable transportation mean to you?

Joseph Berthelot

Every citizen should be able to get to their destination safely, conveniently and affordably whether on foot, in a wheelchair or scooter, on a bicycle, on the bus, or in their own vehicle.

Robert Kirwan

Sustainable transportation consists of a plan of action that will reduce the dependency of residents on automobile usage while promoting more active transportation such as cycling, walking and any other form of non-motorized travel from place to place. It is also about providing options for residents so that they can perhaps combine public transit and take along their bikes for part of the trip or walk for part of the way.

Richard Larcher

John Lundrigan

It is a system which aims to reduce emissions and fuel consumption for a smarter tomorrow.

Kent MacNeill

Transportation that can service the community without gaps in funding and emergency expenditures being borne solely by the taxpayer.

Candidate name 2. How are you going to support it in our community?

Joseph Berthelot

The transit system should operate 24/7 in every section of our city. Our Handi transit, no exception and bicycle paths should be a norm on any street. Do away with these speed reducing islands made on many of our streets.

Robert Kirwan

It is my intention to aggressively promote a planned approach which will result in an expansion of the network of bicycle lanes, trails, multi-use pathways and even paved lanes and sidewalks which will encourage residents to use an alternative form of transportation whenever possible. I will also be suggesting that vehicles which have multiple passengers be provided with some incentive in the form of reduced or free parking at municipal parking lots in order to drastically reduce the number of single-passenger vehicles operating on our roads. This should not only be done with new construction and new developments, but we should begin adding these to existing infrastructure. I think the suggestion of an integrated transportation and land use policy which allows for a more active transportation options. This is something that the planning department may have to start looking for when they approve new applications for developments and retail centers. We should also begin to construct a network of trails and bike paths that allow for people to go from subdivision to subdivision without the need to use vehicles. We should also be trying to encourage people to plan their shopping trips so that they can get everything done in one outing rather than going back and forth numerous times to different destinations.

Richard Larcher

John Lundrigan

I will be a champion for public transit causes, and make an effort to use public transit more often in my daily life.

Kent MacNeill

To ensure transportation suits the needs of all citizens, we need to have a formal plan to ensure that all citizens have access to effective transportation that suits their needs best. This means a holistic approach rather than just a simple “cookie cutter” one size fits all approach.
