Transportation

Platform Statement:

Transportation Survey Responses:

1. What does sustainable transportation mean to you?
To me this means that the City can continue to afford providing this. In North America, only the transit system in California have revenues, majority operate in deficit seldom does it operate in break-even situations.

* 2. How are you going to support it in our community?
I will support sustainability goals. Get the info details of the current state, what are the variables, revenues and expenditures, frequency of replacement staff from sick calls (this was a problem before in the past), hold the cost to encourage more ridership, accessible to all and any disabilities. Tie the accessibility issue with the government mandate on the Ontario Accessibility Act.

* Above includes answer to Top Public Question 3. What are you going to do to enhance walking, bicycling and transit usage in Greater Sudbury over the next 4 years?

Level of support for:

(a) Dedicated annual funding in the municipal budget for cycling and pedestrian infrastructure
Unsure
(b) Adopting a Complete Streets Policy that details how to implement streets that are designed for all users
I will vote in favour
(c) Improvements in transit service and fares to meet the needs of citizens
I will vote in favour
(d) Implementation and coordination of Transportation Demand Management
Explanation:
A - As a northern Ontario community, the use of dedicated bicycles route will be seasonal so I am unsure of this but I will champion safer pedestrian walkway, walking is good for life. B-I will support these in future developments C-I support this for these reasons: reduce pollution, a dedicated transportation for seniors and the disabled, there are best practices already being implemented in other municipalities and cities. We do not have to reinvent the wheel D-We cannot separate or versus: moving people effectively from motorized traffic that is nonsense both modalities use the same road. In peak time traffic, lanes can be designated as high density vehicles – meaning from 2 + passengers on any vehicle, with consequences for those who violate it. Again we can learn from other places who already researched these issues and implemented their best practice. We waste so much time, energy and resources in studies after studies on these are old issues.

Local Food

Platform Statement:

Local Food Survey Responses:

1. How do you see the city’s role in food system sustainability, access to local food, and the connection to health?
Sustainability, access to local food are definitely connected with good health, in general access to food (against hunger) is my priority.

* 2. How would you develop local agriculture and fresh water and forest foods?
Encourage these as projects for starters in land and aqua agriculture and assist for their success. Crops that can have second harvest for the Fall, example England can have 2 crops of the hardy broccoli plants for the growing season. Stocking our lakes with local species – fishing for food and relaxation are great for health. Again, best practice in other places.

* Above includes answer to Top Public Question 2. What is your commitment to encourage a local food economy?

Level of support for:

(a) A food action plan for the city
I will vote in favour
(b) Developing targets for procurement of local food in municipal institutions
Unsure
(c) Providing support for urban agriculture initiatives
I will vote in favour
(d) Expanding the amount of land preserved for agricultural use and avoiding incompatible use
I will vote in favour
(e) Designating the market as a Farmer’s Market
I will vote in favour
Explanation:
A-I have not read this Plan but I would support any Plan for access to affordable food. B-I have not read this. So I cannot comment but I would support the procurement plan that observes the provincial procurement guidelines. C-Yes! Community gardens, the city can afford to designate areas for these. E-Why did we have this Farmers Market where taxpayers spent a great amount of money? Was this to provide a venue for non-locals to sell their produce and goods? I will only support local vendors. Don’t forget we have many local grocery stores here also, why bring non-local vendors here? Let their communities do that for them using their community taxes.

Citizen Engagement

Platform Statement:

Citizen Engagement Survey Responses:

1. How will you ensure that community consultation is done effectively and openly, with productive dialogue from start to finish for municipal projects and decisions?
Mandatory community consultation for project and decisions = contentious and any decisions that will involve taxes paid. Progress reports on a monthly basis to Council. TRANSPARENCY! THERE SHOULD BE NOTHING TO HIDE. Anything hidden connotes wrong doing.

2. How will you ensure a consistent culture of openness and support for public input across all city departments?
Tighten and demand accountability from department heads. Orientation, training and education for Council in City operations. Monthly reports to Council at council meetings. Handing out of contracts must have a set policy in the agreement that considers risk management terms for the City, Complacency, Arrogance and “Untouchable” attitudes by senior management must be dealt with by Council

Level of support for:

(a) Adopting an enhanced system for resolving all issues and complaints, including tracking numbers and prescribed timelines
I will vote in favour
(b) Requiring proactive engagement of citizens and stakeholder groups when forming policies and developing projects
I will vote in favour
(c) Requiring agendas and background material to be publicly posted two weeks in advance, and minutes to be posted one week after meetings of Council and Committees of Council
I will vote in favour
(d) Providing timely, fair and transparent support to citizens and citizen groups for community projects that contribute to the community
I will vote in favour
(e) Ensuring easily accessible, complete and searchable information on the City website
I will vote in favour
