Transportation

Platform Statement:

Transportation Survey Responses:

1. What does sustainable transportation mean to you?
Sustainable transportation, to me, means having access to choose viable alternatives to driving in the city. Every Sudburian should have access to affordable transit that works for them, 7 days a week, all day and night. bike lanes shouldn't be an afterthought to our roads and our transportation infrastructure should be built to take advantage of all modes of transportation, be it walking, biking, taking the bus or driving, without endangering anyone or being solely road-centric.

* 2. How are you going to support it in our community?
I would push for a requirement that new subdivisions have dedicated walking and biking paths in addition to their current green space requirements. Sudbury has a mixture of these paths as it is, but some parts of it exist at the whim of developers and property owners, and one could find themselves walking down their shortcut only to find it bulldozed. Having a dedicated network around the city would make walking and biking and viable option for the average Sudburian to a greater extent than simply adding bike lanes and sidewalks to existing roads. As for transit, the bus system needs an overhaul. Under the current system, young Sudburians may miss out on shifts or even employment opportunities because they have to rely on a bus system that doesn't run early or late enough, and Sunday can be a pain no matter what your reason for riding, and that's if the bus shows up on time. Beyond simply reviewing the transit system, we need to be committed to having it run right, instead of only 'good enough'. That is what I am committed to pushing for.
I would push for dedicated walking and bicycling paths across the city, and seek to improve transit so that it's available whenever they're needed, even on Sundays.
* Above includes answer to Top Public Question 3. What are you going to do to enhance walking, bicycling and transit usage in Greater Sudbury over the next 4 years?

Level of support for:

(a) Dedicated annual funding in the municipal budget for cycling and pedestrian infrastructure
I will champion that
(b) Adopting a Complete Streets Policy that details how to implement streets that are designed for all users
I will vote in favour
(c) Improvements in transit service and fares to meet the needs of citizens
I will champion that
(d) Implementation and coordination of Transportation Demand Management
I will champion that

Water Quality

Platform Statement:

Water Quality Survey Responses:

1. In your view, what are the most important steps the city needs to take to protect water quality?
The city took a great step by restricting phosphorus fertilizer use, but now it needs to continue on that path, find ways to enforce the bylaw itself, as well as adopting larger shoreline buffers.

* 2. How are you going to support it in our community?

I would support continuing to implement the recommendations brought forth to protect our lakes, such as larger shoreline buffers.
* Above includes answer to Top Public Question 1. What plan do you have to protect and sustain our many lakes? What actions will you take to support your plan? What resources will you devote?

Level of support for:

(a) Requiring larger shoreline buffers
I will vote in favour
(b) Dedicated annual funding in the municipal budget to complete priority watershed and subwatershed studies
I will vote in favour
(c) Rejecting development in floodplains and wetlands
I will vote in favour
(d) Adopting higher standards for storm water management, and expanded capacity in vulnerable areas
I will vote in favour
(e) Support for the Vermilion River Stewardship’s opposition of proposed modified run-of-river hydroelectric dams on the Vermilion River

Natural Environment

Platform Statement:

Natural Environment Survey Responses:

1. How will you balance development with protection of the natural environment?
By pushing to curb Sudbury's outwards development and promote the redevelopment of existing properties in town, I would hope to reduce the development of natural lands. It is silly to have large development towards the outer edges of town while at the same time buildings are being torn down and empty lots are left in the downtown and Lloyd/Kingsway area.

2. How will you champion opportunities in your ward to fill gaps in parks service and to protect unique natural areas (identified by the Green Space Advisory Panel)?

Level of support for:

(a) Dedicated annual funding in the municipal budget to implement the green space acquisition strategy
I will vote in favour
(b) Policies in the Official Plan to recognize and protect important natural areas
I will vote in favour
(c) Removing the “Laurentian link” road from the Official Plan transportation schedule
I will champion that
(d) Re-assessing proposed roads on the Transportation Schedule that impact natural areas
I will vote in favour

Platform Statement:

Local Food Survey Responses:

1. How do you see the city’s role in food system sustainability, access to local food, and the connection to health?

* 2. How would you develop local agriculture and fresh water and forest foods?

I would push for municipal support for developing local food providers.
* Above includes answer to Top Public Question 2. What is your commitment to encourage a local food economy?

Level of support for:

(a) A food action plan for the city
Unsure
(b) Developing targets for procurement of local food in municipal institutions
I will vote in favour
(c) Providing support for urban agriculture initiatives
I will champion that
(d) Expanding the amount of land preserved for agricultural use and avoiding incompatible use

Citizen Engagement

Platform Statement:

Citizen Engagement Survey Responses:

1. How will you ensure that community consultation is done effectively and openly, with productive dialogue from start to finish for municipal projects and decisions?
Half of a productive dialogue is having the information available. Rather than simply having public consultations with suggestions be noted, citizens should have access, in simple terms, to the status and current plans of city developments.

2. How will you ensure a consistent culture of openness and support for public input across all city departments?
Making city information available is key, and something I would push for.

Level of support for:

(a) Adopting an enhanced system for resolving all issues and complaints, including tracking numbers and prescribed timelines
I will champion that
(b) Requiring proactive engagement of citizens and stakeholder groups when forming policies and developing projects
I will champion that
(c) Requiring agendas and background material to be publicly posted two weeks in advance, and minutes to be posted one week after meetings of Council and Committees of Council
I will vote in favour
(d) Providing timely, fair and transparent support to citizens and citizen groups for community projects that contribute to the community
I will vote in favour
(e) Ensuring easily accessible, complete and searchable information on the City website
I will champion that

Climate Change

Climate Change Survey Response:

The city should make every effort to include more energy efficient means into its day to day operations, as well as municipal infrastructure. As someone who worked with his dad to install a solar water heater on our roof, and maintain our rain water sprinkler system, I know that being less wasteful isn't just possible, but it saves money, and implementing more energy saving and water saving measures into city operations would pay big dividends.
