Water Quality Survey Questions Summary

Candidate name 1. In your view, what are the most important steps the city needs to take to protect water quality?

Joseph Berthelot

Always first is the idea that everyone should protect our water (educate public). The city's responsibility is to plan, manage and enforce regulations in regards to our water.

Robert Kirwan

We must start conserving water as much as possible and put an end to the use of hazardous products in our residential and commercial sectors of the community. We must also take care to reduce the recreational use of boats on our lakes and rivers. Anything the city can do to encourage people to cease contributing to the pollution of our water supply is important to the long term protection of our water quality. It is important to have a program of testing of the water quality in our lakes and rivers so that we can take positive steps to deal with problems as soon as they are detected.

Richard Larcher

John Lundrigan

Education and commitment. We must learn to understand our fragile water eco-systems and by doing so we will make smarter and more resilient decisions on Water Quality.

Kent MacNeill

Limiting motorboat useage and ensuring runoff from industrial and agricultural areas is monitored and treated

Candidate name 2. How will you move these forward?

Joseph Berthelot

We have to make people understand that the responsibility is not only on the city, we have to do our share to protect the environment. We scream at the blue algae and I have walked the beaches of our city and it is disgusting how people can make a beautiful site look like a dump site.

Robert Kirwan

I will first of all make sure that our city is being a good role model in demonstrating to our residents the adoption of the most visible and effective conservation efforts. I will also see if I can convince Council to provide special grants and incentives to encourage residents to adopt good practices in their own homes and property. This will include everything from replacing worn out septic systems, planting trees and shrubs, using green products around the home, and reducing the consumption of water on lawns, washing cars, etc. While we cannot pay for all of the upgrades, we may be able to offer other incentives that have a high value to residents and a low cost to the city.

Richard Larcher

John Lundrigan

I will commit to following the recommendations of the Nickel District Conservation Authority Source Protection Plan.

Kent MacNeill

By receiving reports from the Wetlands Conservation Authority and acting on recommendations provided.
