Survey Responses

1. If you are elected, what do you most want to accomplish during this term of Council?

My platform is focused on 4 main pillars, which include Residential, Retail, and Recreational development and Responsibility. I see the Kingsway Entertainment District as an opportunity to grow our local economy and stablize taxes with this new growth. I recognize the importance of safe streets and neighbourhoods and will adopt the complete streets policy. I will also advocate for further investments in our parks and greenspaces and build on the work that has been initiated in ward 11 . which has included enviromental stewardship and cycling infrastructure. A component of the responsibility platform will focus on providing leadership and support to grassroots organizations such as the Community Action Network, Minnow Lake Restoration Group, playground associations and community gardens.

2. When deciding how to vote, or where to dedicate your time on Council, how important to you is:
[most important; very important; important; not important; don’t know]
a) Supporting a sustainable local food system:
very important
b) Protecting and improving water quality and the natural environment:
very important
c) Making it safer and more convenient to get around the City on foot or with a mobility device, by bike, or on the bus:
most important
d) Climate Change action and resilience:
e) Transparency and citizen engagement:
most important
f) Implementing the Truth and Reconciliation Commission recommendations at a local level:
g) Equity, and a life of dignity for all:
most important
h) Economic development:
most important

3. The Paris Climate Agreement is a commitment to “holding the increase in the global average temperature to well below 2 °C above pre-industrial levels and to pursue efforts to limit the temperature increase to 1.5 °C above pre-industrial levels,” to avoid unacceptable risks to humanity. To reach this goal, carbon emissions must peak by the year by 2020 at the latest – during the next term of Council.

On a scale of 1 – 10, what is your level of concern about climate change, with 10 being the highest?

4. What will you do to reduce local carbon dioxide emissions and increase Greater Sudbury’s resilience to climate change in our natural and built environment?
Through environmental stewardship with orgnizations like Earthcare Sudbury and Rethink Green, Greater Sudbury is an enviromental leader. As councillor I will work with these organizations as well as our industry partners in the environment and in innovation to continue to support and advance their work while developing and building on best practices and knowledge.

5. What will you do to support meaningful citizen engagement in municipal policies and decisions, and to support citizen-led community improvements?
The Community Action Networks is a great place to start. We also need to improve communication amoung our residents and have very clear policy statements as well as clear and consistent messaging to help engage citizens to understand the issues. As councillor it is my responsiblity to support grassroots and community organizations and to engage our behalf. There also seems to be an education component that is lacking in our communications. We must work together as a council and function with one voice once a decision has been made so we can take great pride our community while respecting its citizens and the will of council.

6. What will you do ensure that the health of Greater Sudbury’s lakes, rivers and creeks are protected and enhanced?
The Lake Stewardship Committees, Junction Creek Stewardship Committee and ReThink Green are leaders in this area. I will work with these organizations to have a better understanding of the issues and to work together to develop community based solutions. I know there are concerns with the level of salt leaching into Lake Ramsey, however, salt management is the problem, not the development, so we must address the issue of salt. I would also have a greater concern that dangerous goods are being moved by train through our Downtown and along a major source of drinking water. As part of my Young, Responsible, Leadership platform, I plan to accept responsibility for our decision making and will worth with environmental organizations to be solution oriented.

7. Here are some of our specific priorities that require leadership to implement. Indicate your level of support for:
[I will champion that, I will vote in favour, I will vote against, Unsure]
a) Creating a minimum grid of safe connected cycling routes across the city during this term of Council:
I will champion that
b) Providing staff to support food initiatives such as community gardens:
I will champion that
c) Giving citizens a direct say in community improvements through participatory planning and budgeting:
I will vote in favour
d) Educating private contractors and the public on the harmful effects of sodium and chloride on the environment and human health and finding alternatives:
I will vote in favour

8. Greater Sudbury has some new policies in place or in progress that have the potential to make a huge difference for our community if they are implemented. Indicate your level of support for implementing and resourcing these fundamental policies and plans:

[I will champion that, I will vote in favour, I will vote against, Unsure]
a) Energy and emissions plan; Climate change adaptation plan:
I will vote in favour
b) Transit action plan; Transit Master Plan; Transportation Demand Management Plan; Complete Streets Policy; Road Safety Audit; Sidewalk Priority Index; sustainable transportation elements of the Transportation Master Plan:
I will champion that
c) Greater Sudbury Food Strategy:
I will champion that
d) Subwatershed studies and plans.; Water and Wastewater Master Plan:
I will vote in favour

9. What (if any) steps are you going to take to tackle the use of disposable single-use plastics within our city? Are you willing to lead the way by having a conversation about it?
This question was chosen by the public using a ranked ballot process, from among the list of questions submitted by citizens.
Possibly eliminating election signage would send a strong message. There is also a movement in the city to ditch plastic straws which is something that could be implemented city wide. Some cities have been banned plastic shopping bags. I believe we can also do better in our waste diversion and garbage collection. The City of Guelph and Saskatoon are leaders in this area with strict rules and community education programs for residents and in schools.

10. Is there anything else you would like to add?
Thank you for the opportunity to participate in this survey. Throughtout my work across Canada, I have had the opportunity to travel a lot. While travelling I am always exploring and looking at other best practices and simple ideas that can easily be implemented here. I look forward to the opportunity to serve as ward 11 councillor and to build on the work that has been done. These are critical and important times in our community. We need strong, youthful, progressive, collaborative leadership to move our city forward with projects like the Kingsway Entertainment District, which can help grow our tax base and increase the safe quality of life that we work hard for and deserve in Greater Sudbury.
